The Parallel Traces Contest is a photography and audiovisual competition focusing on visual representations from an out of ordinary point of view of whatever remains of Jewish Heritage in the urban tissue of five cities: Girona, Wroclaw, Tbilisi, Sighet and Belgrade.

The proposal for the artists was to capture the essence of the contemporary traces left by Jewish citizens in the selected participant countries. The Parallel Traces Competition focuses on architecture and urbanism, regarding the Jewish Heritage in order to: generate a contemporary artwork in digital format; showcase common elements that bring closer together citizens with Jewish and non-Jewish descent and culture; show that Jewish culture is part of our common home Europe and the traces belonging to a Jewish past are still alive in our everyday way of living; better understand the past.

Girona

The city of Girona has an important Jewish past that covers more than six centuries in the middle Ages.
Among the heritage preserved to these days, we can find numerous written documents and sepulchral slabs of the Jewish cemetery with beautiful epitaphs that speak of women and men who were part of the city of Girona.
This video attempts to quickly review the physical space that covers the Jewish quarter of Girona nowadays, to show its own atmosphere, and a small part of its heritage content.
The Jewish quarter of Girona, a lithographic landscape where stones take their full meaning and where the words of the poet Paul Celan still echo when he spoke of a “writing of shadows on the stones.”

As an artist, I am always fascinated by human beings. In this work, I captured the gaze of numerous individuals confronted by the traces of Jewish heritage surrounding them in Wrocław.
I worked with three elements: the observant human, the object of the human gaze, and the looking glass that carries the message linking the two.
The mirror is a deep well that allows us to glimpse into the bottomless past – in the words of Thomas Mann. In each of the three photographs we see a fragment of a larger crystal mirror; the three selected subjects represent a fragment of the larger group engaged in the project.

We see reflected fragments of Wrocław: the Jewish cemetery still in use, and the White Stork Synagogue. Each reflection is in turn a piece of a larger, coherent urban time and space built stone by stone, generation by generation.

Edith

Edith leaves her house in Breslau on 13th of October 1933. She packs up her life. What makes her run? What makes this woman leave her previous life behind? “Edith” was made by the group of young creatives from Germany, Poland and Ukraine during a week workshop in Wroclaw, Poland. The shooting process took place in the Edith Stein House, where the family of Edith lived at the eve of 20th century.

Georgian-Jewish relations was recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the country last year and even if there was no single Jewish artifacts left in Georgia, the role of Jewish culture would still be declared as great treasure of Georgian nation. But fortunately there are numerous material traces of ‘Jewish Georgians’ throughout the whole country and especially in Capital City. The ancient architectural masterpieces of Jewish heritage embed in old Tbilisi streets are indivisible part of urban image delighting the wonderers of narrow streets who seek for something special and outstanding: the houses, doors, windows, reliefs proudly declaring about their Jewish origins. What is more important, these artifacts do not remain as untouchable exhibits but are kept alive and loved by current masters or inhabitants of the city.

My work is an attempt to re-discover my home city and capture the Jewish heritage as a vivid part of Tbilisi.

For this photo I arrived very early in the morning, I had to catch the golden hour, since the film is very delicate and sensitive when it comes to light… Besides, I wanted to have sun in my pictures, because for some reason I associate Jewish aesthetics with sun and warmth… So, I am standing with my camera, the street is partially awake, windows are slowly opening, people are coming out on their balconies, and someone is walking a really tiny dog… When for a second I am transferred somewhere in Israel, as soon as I see the Jewish people with their inherent seriousness and solemnity arriving for the Morning Prayer… Though, they greatly contributed to this ambience, which I must admit have never noticed before, I was a bit shy to ask for a permission to enter, didn’t even think to take a picture of them… Thus, I decided to stay outside and search for an angle which I think best describes this charming diversity and integral existence of the Jewish heritage in Georgian life…

The Hidden Beauty

I always perceived this building as one of the beauties hidden by this city… If you don’t decide to enter an arch, rest in one of the surrounding cafés or deliberately visit this place, you will not have the chance to lay your eyes on the Synagogue being an inherent part of the social life occurring on a street leading to the old city… All these curious details are creating an unusual setting… The Synagogue itself, signs, light bulbs, cafés and hotels “live” independently from one another, even though they share a fairly small space beyond an arch… However, nothing seems to prevent the Synagogue to stand proudly as a symbol of an astounding culture and one of the oldest religions in history…

Star of David and Grapes

I believe, this photo symbolizes a harmonious coexistence of Georgian and Jewish symbols – grapes and the Star of David… This picture for me conveys a deep-rooted respect among two cultures living together under the same sky for centuries. I wholeheartedly believe that our mutual respect is based on similar core values, which have been manifested in various aspects of social and religious life, slightly interfering, and being always open to one another…

The series consists of three photos that were taken in the “District of Four Denominations” in Wroclaw. “Picture 1” is a photo of the “Crystal Planet Monument” set on the square constituting a symbolic gate to the “Four Temples District” in Wrocław. The monument symbolizes the unity of the modern world and the possibility of co-existence of various religions in the urban tissue side by side. Picture “Picture 2” and “Picture 3” are elements of “Synagogues Under White Stork in Wroclaw” – a place of not only religious practices but also dynamically developing cultural center in which there are numerous concerts, theater performances, previews. Every year, thousands of people, not only of the Jewish faith, look at the places that have been immortalized in my photographs. Immortalized elements in the pictures are at the same time a remnant of the Jewish heritage present in the urban tissue and a permanent element of everyday life.

Traces of Jewish presence in my native town, Sighet can be found at every step, since the town was a jewish shtetl. For me the subject is very familiar since I’m one of the fiew middle generation Jews, descendant of a deported family. I chose 3 praying houses because sacredness is a source of inspiration beyond time and space. I tried to capture the light and the word in the absence of a synagogal minyan. The viewer of my photos can imagine himself there, giving this space a value, making it immortal. A photo that brings you closer to the Divine is always a suggestion to meditation. The big interior is the actual synagogue from Sighet, but it contains in the right corner along the red carpet the Aron Kodesh from a small former praying house from Ruscova. The room with candle was a very unique small praying place located inside of a private house: the house of Mr Drimer, my Talmud Torah teacher during my childhood.

How is it possible to connect the past to the present? What kind of traces could such a community left which was exiled more than five hundred years ago? How is it relevant still today the once rich and vivid sfaradi jewish culture here? I asked myself these questions before I went to Girona.

But I didn’t look for only jewish symbols there. I didn’t want to go only to the Call and take pictures there. I searched for a more universal connections that could connect the current catalan culture with the jewish past of the place. The symbols that I found at the end, are universal and meaningful in both cultures and times, and possible to relate to them in different levels. Not only by their symbols, but also by the words I tried to create a connection – the once spoken hebrew (and ladino) of the past is connected with the now speaking catalan by the first letter of the words and form a continuation in this way.

1. Cel – Hashamaim
“In the beginning God created the heaven…” Genesis 1:1

For both catalan catholics and sephardi jews of the 15th century, this sentence is the common starting point and religious cornerstone of both cultures. The conception of the creation, God and heavens barely changed over the centuries for the religious communities. Maybe the history created different situation, but we can see the same sky over us if we look up at the Jewish Museum of Girona (like I did).

2. Rei – Melech
“O Lord, in Your strength shall the King (David) rejoice.” – Psalms 21:2

Rulers and kings are also something in common in spanish and ancient jewish history alike – even though, the later jewish history totally missing kings for obvious reasons. However, the stories, legends and the historical significance of the glorious rulers play a similar role in both culture.

3. Peixos – Dagim
“Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare to thee.” – Job 12:8

Fishes as symbolic animals, and not less as cuisine unites present and past, catalan and jewish. We can think of the fish that is traditionally eaten on Rosh Hashana or the also traditional paella and fideuá, or the many things that fish can symbolize in both cultures, such as: luck, fertility and abundance for example.

Photography has been my hobby for 45 years. While working at a high school, I conduct extracurricular activities in photography. In times of an overflow of digital photos, I encourage young people to think in an “analogue” way when taking pictures, just as if they had only 36 shots
at their disposal.

For over 25 years, as a supervisor of a Polish-German project, I have been photographing the Old Jewish Cemetery in Wroclaw and a Polish-German group of students from ASSA High School in Wroclaw and Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium in Berlin working together. My photographs depict how the cemetery-museum has been changing as a result of renovation and cleaning-up. The magic of this place is passed on to the students. For them it is a live history lesson, a poignant story about the fate of a nation which was to disappear from the face of the earth. This project proves that, despite the terrible past, we can learn history together, draw conclusions from it and build new bonds and friendships. Although it’s difficult to express it in only three photographs, I have tried…

I have prepared a triptych for the Parallel Traces contest. These are photos taken at the Perec square (Plac Icchaka Lejba Pereca) in Wroclaw, where I live. The square’s charming tenement houses encouraged me to learn more about their history.
The richness of Jewish culture and tradition is clearly noticeable here.
By taking part in the competition, I wanted to share with the recipients the beauty and seductive charm of this old buildings I discovered.

Regarding my three photographs (Gemilut Hasadim [and Oneg Šabat]; ruins of Kal Viežo; and the former Bet Israel) sent in to The Parallel Traces competition

I could state that my interest in this contest was awakened by my partial distant Jewish ancestry. Or I could perhaps explain how I won the Simha Kabiljo Short Story Prize for Jewish writing from former Yugoslavia in 2011 and thought I needed to expound into the realm of photography, as most people do today, when technical ease made cameras omnipresent.
But in fact, this is something more fundamental than a visceral response to being “selected”, along with many other people, for simultaneous online antisemitic and homophobic attacks by Nazi US citizens just because I had written reviews of two Jewish short films in Vancouver for an LGBT (at the time the acronym stood only so) monthly. It is a feeling of needing to stand witness, to be a “Keeper of Accounts” like the Poland born New Yorker and Holocaust survivor, lesbian poet Irena Klepfisz explains in her eponymous essay. And the more so, the older I have gotten. So, there…

Photography 1: The “Bet Rachel” Synagogue is situated at 13 Kozhevennyi Street in Tbilisi, Georgia; the location is an old, historically significant part of Tbilisi. The synagogue was built in the 19th century. The importance of harmonization is very well preserved and showcased in this place as this photo shows; we see other building/hospitality facility adjacent to the synagogue in such a way that inseparable complex is formed. People (local citizens as well as foreign guests) visit this area, dine at the open-air restaurant and same time relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.

Photography 2: This Jewish house located at 128 David Aghmashenebeli Avenue in Tbilisi, Georgia. Powerful Jewish symbols and ornaments are depicted on the façade. The house was built in the 19th century; some unique architectural features (overarching roofing, wide windows, attic layout) that we observe looking at the building, enhance appearance of this house and give the strong impression of magnificence and grandeur. The house is located in the middle of one of the main avenues in Tbilisi; thus, the house has become a positive representation of friendship and harmonious co-existence.

My photographic work focuses on both street photography and conceptual work. I would like to explore the boundaries between persons and the things that they own and use. The latter are seen as lifeless, inert objects, that are only activated upon the person’s will. I wander if the active-passive dialectics attached to the person-object pair can be reversed, on the grounds of psychological continuity. I would like to design an experiment that challenges the passive role attributed to the things that people use (like clothes, domestic objects, etc.). The general idea is that, if a person
doesn’t possess the object anymore, but )has some memory about it, it is not the same person that had possessed it.

“Silent Witness: Belgrade’s First Department Store”

Jewish heritage in Belgrade was systematically destroyed during and after WWII. While there are still several Jewish heritage landmarks in the city, there are dozens of architectural gems that stand as silent witnesses to their epochs and to people who once lived and worked in them. One of the most remarkable examples of such a silent witness is the Belgrade’s first commodity market built in 1907 in the style of the Viennese Secession. This groundbreaking and pioneering project was designed by architect Viktor David Azriel (1880-1942) and commissioned by Bencion Buli (1867-1933), banker and deputy of the Parliament. Both were of Jewish descent.
Azriel was murdered with other Jews of Belgrade in 1942. Today, the building hosts a café. There is no memorial plaque. In my unadorned view of the building, I aimed to catch the “anonymity” of this place – tucked between other houses, almost indiscernible. However, this place preserves the memory of the Jewish presence and integration into local culture, and their impact on history and the development of the cultural and urban image of Belgrade.

Rosa is first and foremost a plastic artist. Born in Madrid, she has a degree in Fine Arts and has pursued further studies through a fellowship in Florence and at New York’s School of Visual Arts (SVA). All her career has been devoted to the art world as painter, photographer and cultural organizer. She has lived in Mexico, New York, Jerusalem and in Brussels as a long time residence. Her work has been shown in many individuals and collective exhibitions and it featured in several collections and museums. Represented by the gallery Grosvenor-El Harar in Brussels (Belgium). Victor Sorenssen
Victor Sorenssen is the director of the AEPJ, the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage. In addition to participating in different European projects, he coordinates in the AEPJ the European Route of Jewish Heritage of the Council of Europe and the European Days of Jewish Culture. In Barcelona he is co-director of the Mozaika Jewish Cultural Platform and the Casa Adret Cultural Center, an innovative space for the promotion of Jewish culture and social activism. Victor Sorenssen has a degree in Political Science and has studied Semitic Philology.

Itsik Moshe was born on December 31, in 1959 and is currently President of the Israel-Georgia Chamber of Business and the founder and Chair of Israeli House, the organization concentrated on Israeli Hasbara in the former USSR. Formerly he was the representative of the Jewish Agency in 5 USSR countries.

In 1989, during the Soviet regime established the first mission of WUJS in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi and after that in other countries of the Soviet Union. In 1989, he was elected as the first representative of the Jewish Agency in the Soviet Union and established first international official representation center in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Georgia. Until 1992 Itsik Moshe served as the head of the Jewish Agency Representation Centers in South Caucasus and Central Asia. In 1995 achieved the highest professional role and became the director of the central mission of Jewish Agency located in Moscow. This office supervised all other representation centers and representatives in the CIS. Since 1996 serves as President of the Israel-Georgia Chamber of Business – the organization which has already become the main bridge between the countries in the fields of culture, business and public relations. In 2012, expressed his protest in media and criticized publicly the decision N67/19 of the United Nations General Assembly, where Georgia, along with 138 countries, voted in favor of the Palestinian side. After this decision, the idea of opening of Hasbara campaign has been created. In 2013 he founded Israeli House, which represents the organization of Israeli Hasbara in the Former Soviet Union and aims to strengthen the links between the friendly states. At the same time, he is the Chairman of the Association of Friends of the Museum of Prehistory located in the Upper Galilee and invited the member of the Knesset Lobby for the Promotion of a Solution for the Israeli-Arab Conflict.
In 2017 a cooperation between Israeli House, the Ministry of Culture of Georgia and the AEPJ – The European Association of Jewish Heritage was launched regarding the promoting of Jewish Heritage in Georgia. Including establishing the European Routes of Jewish Heritage in Georgia and conducting every year the EDJC – European Days of Jewish Culture events.

Bente Kahan
The Norwegian born Jewish actress, musician, director and playwright received her formal training in performing arts in Tel-Aviv and New York and has been working as a concert and stage artist since 1981. She began her career with a leading part at Habima, Israel’s national theatre, and continued later to perform on stages in Oslo, including “Nationaltheatret”, the Norwegian national theatre. She performed Yiddish songs and stories early on in her career and since 1986 she started to appear in her own monodramas co-authored with the Norwegian stage director Ellen Foyn Bruun.
The production company “Teater Dybbuk – Oslo” was founded by her in 1990, with the aim to present European Jewish culture and history through theatre and music.
Numerous dramas, concerts and CDs were produced, and Bente performed for many years internationally with musicians from Norway, Poland, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands, using archival material as well as her own written texts and compositions.
Bente moved with her family to Wrocław , Poland, In 2001, and in 2005 she created the Center for Jewish Culture and Education in the city’s synagogue, the White Stork Synagogue (1829). The following year she established the Bente Kahan Foundation, which became responsible for the culture center and the restoration of the synagogue (completed in 2010), the “shul”,(little synagogue, 2015), the “mikveh” , ritual bath, and additional space for the Center in the synagogue’s basement (2017/2018).
As a director of Wroclaw’s Center for Jewish Culture and Education, she has produced exhibitions and concerts, as well as theatre plays, many of them written and directed by her and performed by Polish artists. The historic synagogue in Wroclaw, serves today as a prestigious cultural venue with events focused on tolerance and diversity, such as the annual
“Days of Mutual Respect” initiated by Bente at the inception of the center.
Bente Kahan is still requested to perform internationally as a singer with her wide repertoire linked to the European Jewish experience.

Alina Marincean
Alina has a BA in Jewish Studies and History at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj Napoca, Romania. Presently she is a museum curator at the Elie Wiesel Museum. Jewish cultural Museum in Sighet, Romania. She is also a professional tour guide, specialized in Jewish Heritage. Alina was born in Sighet and is extremely dedicated to Jewish studies, researching and coordinating educational and cultural projects.

Andrija was born in Belgrade in 1984. He has graduated Management and Production of Theatre, Radio and Culture at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade and has a Bachelor degree in Information Management at Singidunum University, Belgrade. He has gained professional experience through various cultural events and in 2011 he was a founding member of Tačka Komunikacije, which has enabled him to work on the design and production of numerous cultural heritage, social history and new media projects.

Assumpció holds a Degree in History by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
In 1987 she began working for the city of Girona in the development of the ancient historic Jewish Quarter. She was named director of the  Patronat Call de Girona in 1992, a position she is still currently exercising. The Patronat manages the Bonastruc ça Porta Centre, the Museum of Jewish History and the Nahmanides Institute for Jewish Studies.
From 1995 to 2016 she has been working as General Secretary of the network Red de Juderias de España, a public association funded by several Spanish municipalities, running programs to preserve, promote and disseminate their historic Jewish legacy.
She is a founding member of the AEPJ (European Association for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage) holding the responsibility of Secretary General since 2011. The AEPJ, based in Luxembourg, is developing as main projects the “European Day of Jewish Culture” and the “European Route of Jewish Heritage”, awarded Main Cultural Itinerary by the Council of Europe in 2005.

Graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, since 2001 he established himself as a professional in the field of photography, dividing his time between teaching, his work as editor for Ediciones Anómalas and the production of personal artworks. His work – present in numerous public and private collections – is exhibited regularly in Spain and particularly in France. Among his most important exhibitions we highlight the following: Cartographies éparses in the Box Galerie (2019), Le temps éparpillé 1995-2015 (2015) in the Imagerie de Lannion and the Galerie VU (2015), Atles i altres cartografies (2013) at the Tagomago Gallery in Barcelona.
He has been invited in artist residencies on different occasions: in Diaphane for the project Voyage in pays du clermontois (2018), in Toulouse in Residence 1 + 2 (2017), in the Domaine de Kerguéhennec for the project La gravetat del lloc (2016), in Le Blanc for the project Le nom qui efface la couleur (2013), in the Carré d’Art for the project Térritoire d’Expériences (2012). His work is interpreted as an exploration of universes always originating from the spectrum of the emotional. For him photography is nothing else than trying to map a fictional space filled with open, mysterious and ambiguous meanings that diminish the rational experience and that suggest the most poetic character of the image. Documentary producer, photographer.
For a few years now, her camera has been accompanying Hassidim arriving from all around the world the old Tzaddiks – spiritual leaders – graves. More, she penetrates  hermetic circles of Jewish orthodoxy in Israel and United States portraying secretive, as often hidden from the Stranger’s eye, territory of everyday and ceremonies of people who devoted their life to the Torah.
Her strong Polish background creates phenomenon of seeking the „lost world”, traces of Jews who for centuries lived with Poles side by side with the tragic end of that close, national relationship which came with WW2.
The fact she is women, non-Jewish photographer, requires acceptance and flexibility of her orthodox characters what provides an additional flavor to her persistent quest.
In 2014, she received the National Geographic Traveler Photo Award for her work “First Time”. Author of over 20 monographic photo exhibitions displayed in The United Nation, NYC, Neve Shalom Istanbul, Polim Museum of Jewih History in WArsaw etc

“Despite our vast differences and cultural disparities, the side by side coexistence between Poles and Jews can be relived on a micro scale in my photographs. It is my sincere hope that by breaking my own stereotypes, I can inspire people from the world over to bridge gaps for a better and more unified socio cultural society.”

Georgian, born in 1987, documentary photographer working on a personal, long term projects mostly in Georgia and Post Soviet Countries, freelancer.
In 2012 won her first Production Grant from Open Society Foundation to Individual photographers from Centraal Asia, The South Caucasus, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Pakistan and in the same year attend the workshop with Thomas Dworzak (Magnum ),Yuri Kozirev (Noor) ,Adrian Kelterborn and Andrei Polikanov.
In 2013 was selected among world 12 best young photographers to attend World Press Photo ‘s Joop Swart Masterclass.
In 2014 was selected as one of 30 best women photographers under the age of 30.
In 2015 from PDN was named among 30 best emerging photographers to watch under the age of 30 and in the same year was finalist at Wallis Annenberg Prize.
In 2017 won European Union Prize for Journalism for Best Documentary photo.
Her Long term projects : “ I Am Georgia “, “My Place “ and “Frozen Waves“ was exhibited around the world.
Dina Oganova is an author of the first Georgian handmade limited edition (87) photo book “My Place”, which is in the personal collection of several museums, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Nikola Radić Lucati

Nikola Radić Lucati, born 1971, has focused his recent work on the intersecting points of history, human rights and culture. His work is reacting to the patterns in the causalities of events as economic transactions that are forming the narrative structures, influencing the universality of projection of human rights and freedoms. The contexts of these transactions and their consequences are observed from the positions of a researcher, a witness and an analyst, attempting to influence their outcomes through the public application of findings in the media of photography, text and installation.
